FAQs
Q:
A new teacher has taken over a class. How do I transfer the data from the previous teacher to this new one?
A:
If the class data is stored in a teacher's user profile (ie Active Directory/My Docs redirection setup) then simply do the following:
1) Transfer the My EAZ MAG... folders from the previous teacher's My Documents folder and put them into the new teacher's My Documents folder.
2) Although this should happen automatically as part of the server setup, ensure that the new teacher has full read/write access on these new folders.
3) Once the new teacher has successfully logged onto the EAZ MAG Writer system under their user profile, they will need to ensure that the Teacher and Class boxes in the Settings (2 cogs) window are modified to reflect the new teacher's status. If they have to change the Class box then they will also need to click the 'Update Pupils with Class' button to reflect this change.
If the class data is stored in a shared folder (ie portable folders on a server) then simply do the following:
1) Go into the appropriate portable class folder on the server share and run up the EAZ MAG Writer system for that folder.
2) Ensure that the Teacher and Class boxes in the Settings (2 cogs) window are modified to reflect the new teacher's status. If the Class box has been changed then the 'Update Pupils with Class' button also needs to be clicked to reflect this change.
Q:
I had a shortcut to the program on my Desktop, but it has disappeared. How do I run up the program?
A:
As well as a shortcut on the Desktop, you can also run the program via Start > Programs > EAZ MAG Writer.
Q:
I have a shortcut icon on my Desktop that looks like it's the program icon, but it looks like a white square with a blue box at the top rather than the usual EAZ MAG Writer icon. When I double-click on this icon it doesn't run up the program. What has happened?
A:
This usually denotes that the shortcut has been put on your Desktop, but the program hasn't actually been installed on this specific machine. Please ask your ICT administrator to install/reinstall the software on this machine.
Q:
My data seems to have disappeared from the teacher version. When I run up the software it goes straight to a blank Settings (2 cogs) window, as if it's the first time I've used it. How can I get my data back?
A:
If using the standard teacher version, this is usually down to the My EAZ MAG... folders being moved out of the root/first window of My Documents.
If these folders are not in this location when the program is started up then the system will create new blank ones.
To resolve:
1) Go into My Documents and rename the current blank My EAZ MAG... folders with a suffix of 'blank'.
2) Locate all of the original My EAZ MAG... folders (usually stored in a sub-folder somewhere as part of a tiday up) and put them back into the root/first window of My Documents.
3) Run up the EAZ MAG Writer teacher version to confirm that everything is back as it should be.
4) If everything is OK, delete all of the 'blank' suffixed My EAZ MAG folders.
Q:
We are having synchronisation problems with data going missing on our server, as it goes back and forth between home and school. Is there an alternative way to run your system?
A:
Although our standard version was designed to use the pre-supplied Active Directory, My Documents Redirection and Offline Synchronisation features of Windows 2000/2003/2008 servers, we also produce a portable version which enables you to run the program and data from within a solitary folder. This portable folder can be stored (with many others) on say a shared place on your server.
Please note that our standard version was developed so that your school server would automatically manage the backing up of your data between school and home and also give you the ability to update your data from any computer in school with very little effort.
Although all of your data can be quickly and easily transferred from the standard version to the portable one, it may be worth discussing your problems with your ICT administrator to see if the synchronisation issues can be resolved rather than abandoning this powerful technology.
Q:
When I first try to run up the program I get a warning message saying that I can't connect. What can I do?
A:
Check one of the following:
1) Is the program already running on another machine? If so, quit the program on the other machine and try again on the machine you are using.
2) If you connect to your class data via a server make sure that you are still connected and sync'd with your server.
