'Use a week of themed activities to engage reluctant writers.'
The Virtual Author Package is a themed week of Literacy activities, with children presented with a range of interactive and multimedia experiences as they work in role as trainee editors. The sessions actively target children’s attainment in reading and writing, focusing specifically on the author’s intentions and use of descriptive language. The package fits seamlessly into the existing Literacy Framework and combines drama, Philosophy for Children, visual literacy and interactive resources in an engaging and real world setting.
Who is it for?
Virtual Author is aimed at Year 6 children, but may also be appropriate across Key Stage 2. The package aims to improve attainment in children of all abilities, but is especially useful in motivating boys and reluctant writers.
How was it developed?
The package was developed by the Zone’s Literacy Consultant and AST for Teaching and Learning, in partnership with current Year 6 Teachers across the Zone Schools. The project is in its fourth year of development.
What resources are available?
A full resource and planning pack is provided for teachers. This combines interactive PowerPoints, Video presentations, Visual Literacy resources and children’s editing packs, together with all relevant Literacy Plans.
What are the training implications?
The Virtual Author package can be implemented and customised by schools based on their individual needs. Full training and the necessary ‘visitors in role’ are available from the Action Zone Team.
