What is the Activity?
'Utilise short films in Literacy to motivate children and improve their Literacy skills.'

Visual Literacy training is available utilising a range of short films to enhance teaching and learning in Literacy and across the curriculum. Based on the training from the BFI, various techniques and activities are employed to use film to engage, motivate and improve attainment in Literacy. These activities can be used to develop a range of literacy concepts such as predictions, character studies and story structure.

Who is it for?
The training is ideal for all primary teachers from Foundation to Key Stage 2, and may be of particular interest to Literacy co-ordinators.

How was it developed?
The training package has developed from the BFI Moving Image training combined with a range of resources and activities written by the Zone’s Literacy Consultant and AST for Teaching and Learning.

What resources are available?
A resource pack is available containing planning and activities linked to the BFI Story Shorts and other commonly available films. This combines planning, activities, whiteboard resources, writing resources to apply to BFI or commercially available films.

What are the training implications?
Training can be undertaken in half day, full day or twilight formats to suit the needs and expertise of particular schools. Training across larger groups at cluster level is also available.
